Snorkel and Whale Watching Cruise in Kona, Hawaii

    ByJohn March 15, 2014

After a spectacular time at the Brewfest, the next morning came a little too quickly as Marc and I headed down to the Kona pier to embark on a snorkel and whale watching tour with Body Glove Hawaii. Snorkelling is something I love doing and try to do as much of as possible when I visit Hawaii. Surprisingly, I’d never done a boat trip before. All my snorkelling was done from shore so I was stoked to hear that we’d be headed to a secluded reef.

    Kona Brewers Festival 2014

    ByJohn March 13, 2014March 14, 2014

I just got back from my shortest trip to Hawaii ever…just four days. My pal, Marc Smith, invited me to tag along while he was on the last island (the big island of Hawaii) of his 30 Day Adventures in Hawaii. I’ve been to Hawaii many times but this was the first time back to Kona since I first visited 20 years ago. Fortunately for me, one of the events on his agenda was the 2014 Kona Brewers Festival. Because beer…in Hawaii.

First Look: Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 8.4″ Tablet

    ByJohn February 26, 2014February 26, 2014

A few weeks ago, Samsung Canada loaned me the latest edition of their Android-based tablet, the Galaxy TabPRO. At 8.4 inches, it’s priced and equipped to directly compete with Apple’s iPad Mini.

Ford at the North American International Auto Show

    ByJohn January 26, 2014January 26, 2014

I was recently in Detroit to see what Ford has been working on for the North American International Auto Show (aka NAIAS). It doesn’t get much bigger on this continent than this event in the car world.

A look back at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

    ByJohn January 25, 2014

As the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia approach, it’s hard not to reflect on the amazing time that Vancouver had just four short years ago. For me personally, it was a highlight of my lifetime. I took six weeks off work and was basically a freelance photographer during the both the Winter Olympics and…

Behind the scenes of Ford’s 3D Printing facilities

    ByJohn January 17, 2014March 14, 2014

Earlier this week I had the chance to get a behind the scenes tour of the Ford Motor Company’s 3D printing facilities at the Beech Daly Technical Center in Dearborn, Michigan. This facility is normally closed to visitors (I was only allowed to take photos in certain areas) so this was a pretty rare opportunity…

    The 12 Days of TechMas

    ByJohn December 24, 2013

A few weeks ago I agreed to appear on camera attempting to sing a verse of a remixed version of the 12 Days of Christmas with my friends from Zen Launchpad, Vandrico and a bunch of other folks from the local Vancouver tech/startup community. It’s a fun little video and my segment features a 3D…

3D Systems’ Sense 3D Scanner: Hands On

    ByJohn December 18, 2013August 5, 2014

Last weekend I had the opportunity to try out 3D Systems’ new product, the Sense 3D Scanner. It’s a handheld 3D scanner that allows you to scan just about anything from small objects to buildings. My pal Eugene from Tinkerine Studios brought it over shortly after purchasing it. I’ve been using a Microsoft Kinect and…

SMD soldering – it’s easier than it looks

    ByJohn November 29, 2013November 29, 2013

Recently I took a workshop at the Vancouver Hackspace on SMD soldering which is the process of soldering surface mount devices (aka really TINY parts). This is the kind of soldering usually done by robots to help shrink down our electronic devices and isn’t typically done by hand. I’ve been wanting to learn how to…
