Use that unused Expresscard slot on your MacBook Pro

I took the plunge this past week and bought a 15″ MacBook Pro. This was mostly due to the increasing amount of video and photography I’ve been doing lately and needed a bit more (okay a lot more) horsepower under the hood.

One thing that I’ve always wondered about, is that card slot in the larger MacBook Pro’s. I’ve always chosen the smaller form factor size for my laptops (iBook, 12″ PowerBook and most recently the MacBook Air) – none of which had an Expresscard slot (or it’s predecessors, the PC Card or PCMCIA slot).

Expresscard Multicard Reader

Given the purpose of my laptop upgrade, it seemed fitting that I found you could get media card readers for use in this slot. This saves the hassle of bringing a card reader with you all the time – they are small and very losable. I have the added benefit of being completely on SD cards for all my cameras. Other formats like compact flash are wider than the opening for the Expresscard so those readers a bit bulky and don’t sit flush in the slot.

I found the Sandisk Expresscard reader (which I found in Canada cheaper from one of my favorite online photography gear sources, Henry’s) to be the cheapest/most available. I prefer to trust my media reading with name brand gear so went with Sandisk over some generic brand readers I found online and locally.

Expresscard Multicard Reader

The Expresscard reader just slides into the slot and clicks into place. You click it again to pop it out. It sits flush inside the laptop. When you insert an SD card, it will jut out a little so you’ll have to be careful with it if you have the laptop on your lap. At least you can easily see it in the slot as a reminder to download your photos and eject the card.

Considering most decent card readers cost around the same price, this solution seems pretty solid to me and means I have one less thing to carry.

In case you’re wondering, yes, my MacBook Pro is green…well it’s wearing a green skin at least.

In case you needed more proof…

that Northern Voice is a great conference, watch this awesome tribute video that Laura Blankenship made:

New Photography project

I had recently decided that one easy thing I could do that will help me develop further as a photographer is simply to take more photos. This was further solidified after hearing about the origins of the 365 photo project during Alan Levine’s great presentation at Northern Voice.

Flickr Upload Calendar

This sounds easier than it is…especially with a busy schedule. So one thing about my ‘project’ is to not care what kind of camera I take the photos with. This is something I don’t have a problem with as I think it’s not about the gear, it’s about what you do with it. I also don’t have a theme for my daily photos, although this may change if I get inspired. There is no timeline for this experiment…it will run for as long as I have a camera to use.

The bottom line is that I’m going to endeavor to post (to Flickr) at least one photo every day no matter what as a means of discipline to force me to take better photos and to experiment more.

Northern Voice 2009 Wrapup

What an epic weekend! So much going on surrounding the best little conference ever, Northern Voice. As usual, I’ll try to detail my experiences with photos and video I shot:

Things kicked off Thursday at Federico’s Supper Club with the somewhat controversial (due to political sponsorship) opening dinner which was a lot of fun.

It seems this photo of Jenn and Nadia is a little popular with a few folks online.

I’m not sure why…maybe the lighting?

After a fun night out for dinner, it was up bright and early Friday morning for MooseCamp at the beautiful Forestry Sciences Building at UBC.

Hopefully next year a few more people will show up…

For the most part, I used my fisheye lens the whole weekend….what can I say, I love that lens. Here’s a few more images from the weekend:

Tim Bray led an awesome PhotoCamp this year which as always was a great geek out session for the photographers in attendance. The first thing he asked everyone to do was to take a photo of their neighbour in the room. Here’s my shot of Anthony taken with my LensBaby Composer (unfortunately the only time I had it on my camera the whole weekend):

You can view my complete Flickr set for Northern Voice and check out everyone’s photos tagged for the conference which as I post this was well over 1200 photos.

I want to thank the organizers for all their hard work in putting on one of my favorite conferences every year.

Even the Canucks managed to win a couple games this weekend while the conference was on.

Yes, it was a great weekend.

I’ve driven this route a thousand times…

and I sped it up 1000% in iMovie ’09:

Flying home [float plane trip part II]

Here’s the flight home via float plane from Victoria’s inner harbour to downtown Vancouver:

As before, shot with the Kodak Zi6 and edited with iMovie ’09.

Vancouver to Victoria via floatplane

Earlier this month I went to Victoria for a conference and am just now getting around to posting some video from the trip. The floatplane flight from harbour to harbour was on a rainy and cold Sunday afternoon but I think the video turned out pretty decent despite the weather.

Shot with my Kodak Zi6 HD camera and edited using iMovie ’09 which seems to have it’s quirks but I’m giving it a shot for awhile before I go back to Final Cut. iMovie is definitely faster to pull stuff together like this but you have much more control in Final Cut. I also thought I’d try out YouTube’s HD format. I didn’t have enough upload space on my Vimeo account for the full HD version, plus it would have taken a week to process. I’m really close to dropping the $60 for a Vimeo pro account. If you like rewatching movies, check out the 720×480 version over there.

Flying to Victoria

Stay tuned for part two – the trip home which was fortunately on a much nicer day.

Vancouver Twestival 2009

Last night was the first Twestival in Vancouver, part of a global fundraising project bringing together people on Twitter in support of charity:water.

Twestival

Met a ton of people in real life I follow on Twitter as well as a whole bunch of new people that I’m now following. I shot a pile of photos and put together a short video from the very successful event (apparently enough was raised to build a well):

John Chow (with an appearance by yours truly) and Jordan Behan also shot some fun videos last night.

Looking forward to the next big Twitter gathering – especially when social media folks can do some good.

Memorex Multi-Screen Digital Photo Frame

I came across this cool little photo frame today at Future Shop (who call it a
Memorex 1.5″ Trio Digital Photo Frame). There are a ton of digital frames on the market now but this one stood out as a little different since it has three different screens that your photos show on (35mm film canister for size reference):
Memorex Multi-Screen Digital Frame

Unlike many other frames I’ve seen, it can be run off USB or a battery with 15 hours of battery life or simply plug the USB cable into the included wall plug and run it off AC. You can also rotate it vertically and your photos automagically rotate.

Memorex Multi-Screen Digital Frame

I haven’t been able to make it work under OSX yet but it worked fine under XP via VMWare. It comes with an autorunning app for managing the photos on the frame and even lets you edit them to fit the 128×128 screens that look pretty decent. It has 20mb of memory or about 50 photos at that size.

It’s small, it’s cheap at $29.99 and a cool addition for on your desk or wherever.
