Wired Wednesday 008

This week on News 1130 radio in Vancouver, I spoke about these tech topics for Wired Wednesday with Ben Wilson:

  • Google Is Testing Solar-Powered Drones To Supply 5G Internet From The Air (source)
Google has reportedly been testing flying drones that could be capable of delivering high-speed Internet to the ground. The secretive Project SkyBender would see the solar-powered vehicles supply a 5G-equivalent connection for consumers.
  • Anybody Can Buy This Exoskeleton For the Price of a Midrange Sedan (source)
The Phoenix exoskeleton, a 27-pound wearable robot that could help everyone from disabled vets to kids learn how to ditch their wheelchairs and walk again on their own two feet. It costs $40,000. The Phoenix was designed by the California-based robotics company suitX, which specializes in medical and industrial exoskeletons. The suit’s based on research from the robotics lab at the University of California, Berkeley. And now it’s finally being sold to the public, albeit for a relatively steep sum.
  • Microsoft shows how NFL fans could use HoloLens in the future (source)
The video (below) shows how football fans could one day use the device to enhance the game-day viewing experience, right from their living room. One scene, for example, gives us a glimpse at someone wearing HoloLens and using gestures to bring up a 3D hologram of a stadium, which shows detailed information such as attendance and weather.

Then, you can see another user who, as a game is happening on TV in the background, sees live fantasy football stats complete with motion graphics. You also get a hologram of Marshawn Lynch running through the wall, similar to Microsoft’s Project XRay mixed reality title — but here it’s about showing you the player’s height, weight and more.
