Tech Tuesday: Solar powered tents and open your door with your phone

This week on News 1130 radio in Vancouver, I talked about these items:

  • Eddie Bauer Katabatic 2 Solar Tent: Coming next spring, geeks will have a new reason to go camping when Eddie Bauer releases their Katabatic 2 solar tent. It features interior wiring that can work with battery packs to store from 50Wh up to 1250Wh of power – enough for small appliances or a pile of iPhones charged. It won’t be cheap though at $600 for the tent plus another $300-400 for various battery/panel configurations.
  • Kwikset Kevo: a new $230 deadbolt lock system from Kwikset uses Bluetooth technology to allow you to unlock your front door by being in range with your smartphone and simply touching the mechanism to unlock it. It also includes a physical fob and two digital fobs for iPhone use.
