Upcoming Events: May/June

The nice weather has just started and it’s already turning into an insanely busy few months for me. Here’s a few things that I’ve got coming up that you might want to check out:

  • ProTECHtivity (May 23/June 6/June 20): My friend Steve Dotto is back with his day long workshops on having technology work for you. First up is West Vancouver on Thursday, May 23 (still a few tickets left) then it’s on to Victoria on June 6th and then the Fraser Valley on June 20th. I’m going to take in the West Vancouver session as it’s filled with great speakers and good friends.
  • Breaker Faire (May 25): A fundraiser for Vancouver Community Lab and MakerFaire, this event is by donation and should be a fun way to get ready for MakerFaire which is the following weekend (see next item). You’ll be able to see some great local art creations, get a pancake breakfast, operate a giant claw game, smash a vehicle and lot more. Find more info on their Facebook event page.
  • Vancouver Mini Maker Faire (June 1-2): I’m bringing the 3D Printer Village back to the PNE this year at Maker Faire. We’ve got at least 15 different 3D printers coming from members of the 3D604 club just at our booth alone along with a huge lineup of other amazing things to see and do. It looks like I’ll also be speaking on a panel discussion about the ethics of 3d printing and what the technology can/can’t do on the Saturday (June 1st). This is shaping up to be the biggest Maker Faire yet and it’s a great family friendly event for the whole weekend.
  • Northern Voice (June 14-15): I think this will be my 6th Northern Voice conference in a row. The last few years I’ve hosted the PhotoCamp session but this year I thought I’d give a talk about blogging for yourself and creating what I’m calling ‘honest content’ in my talk called “How Blogging Changed My Life” – a riff on my talk at SXSW earlier this year. It’s about writing for yourself instead of trying to target SEO or some other agenda. This blog is the template I’ve used for years and I’ll discuss the doors that have opened by following a few simple principles. This year, it’s being held at one of my favorite venues in town, at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre / Museum of Vancouver in Vanier Park. It always sells out so get your tickets asap!

Hope to see you at one (or more) of these events!
