Tech Tuesday: Scanadu’s Scout tricorder and create your own GPS watch apps

This week on News 1130 radio in Vancouver, I talked about these items:

  • Scanadu’s Scout tricorder: an entrant in the Tricorder XPrize contest, the Scout is Scanadu’s crack at bringing the famous medical diagnosis device from Star Trek to a reality. The $150 device due out next year packs a lot into it’s 2 inch square package that contains a rechargeable battery, IR , EEG and EKG scanners, plus an accelerometer, Bluetooth radio and a micro-USB port. Once paired with your smartphone, you can track a person’s heart rate, breathing rate, body temperature, pulse transit (essentially systolic blood pressure) and blood oxygenation all by just holding the device in your hand or holding it to your temple.(source)
  • Suunto Ambit: GPS enabled watches have been popular with athletes for a while now and Suunto is now offering the ability (via a software update) for anyone to customize the apps on their Ambit watch via a simple web interface by choosing from all the data the watch captures including distance, speed, heart rate and pressure among other data streams that the watch captures. This allows the user to create customized apps that can display the estimated time left in their marathon for example. (source)
