So Zombies think they can dance

Apparently, they can…and there are lots of them!

Thrill the World

Over 235 zombies invaded the Roundhouse this past Saturday for Thrill the World Vancouver, part of a global event to simultaneously perform the Michael Jackson classic to break a world record, as well as raise money for the the Vancouver Food Bank.

I managed to get a pretty good vantage point for some video:

After seeing many of the zombies at the rehearsals, it was fun to see them in full zombie costume…there were some very creative ideas on display:

I like the fact that my Zombie category is growing.

Granville Island Night Photowalk

The second photowalk in October for the No Compacts Allowed group was at Granville Island…at night. The original plan was to meet up and wander around the island taking shots. This time we had a nice diversion with a trio of models coming out and transforming our walk into an impromptu Strobist meetup. Here’s a few of my favorite shots from the night:

We had a great turnout of people and everyone was sharing gear and knowledge…it was a lot of fun for everyone. My full set of photos from the walk is on Flickr.

Thanks to Barbara, Jessica and Mishelle for coming out and facing the gauntlet of photographers. Next photowalk is set for November 7th during the day…join the Facebook group to get the full scoop.

Thrill the World [rehearsals]

Earlier this year, I shot some photos & video at the Vancouver Zombie Walk. The ‘opening act’ if you will, was a number of people dancing as part of the Thrill the World Vancouver event that is coming up on October 24th.

They got a fair amount of interest from the gathering crowd outside the art gallery. I was asked back to shoot some more photos and video of their rehearsals for the big event that will take place at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver next weekend.

Thrill the World [rehearsal]

As you can see from these photos, they had a huge turnout for the rehearsal…the place was packed with people young and old.

Thrill the World [rehearsal]

I shot a bunch of video and photos as well as some fun timelapse clips of the rehearsals…here’s the short video covering it all:

There were a lot of little kids learning all the moves…and they were really getting into it…very cool to see an event like this bring people together…with the added bonus of it being for a charity as all participants will be donating some cash to benefit the Vancouver Food Bank.

Thrill the World [rehearsal]

One thing that really surprised me was the effort everyone was putting into this…they REALLY wanted to do it right and spent hours practicing the moves while I was there…and this was only one of a handful of rehearsals. I can only imagine how awesome the event will be next Saturday with all these folks coming out in full Zombie costume.

Congratulations to Graham, the dance instructors and volunteers for pulling this all together. If you want to see it happen live, head down to the Roundhouse by 5:30pm on Saturday to see the full zombie invasion.

Visit the Thrill the World website for all the details. As usual, you can view my full photoset on Flickr.

Fire on the Water

Last summer, during the photoshoot at the morgue, I came up with the idea of doing another shoot with Charles & Barbara on the beach. They had mentioned while we were shooting that they spun fire and I thought that would be a pretty cool project for us to work on.

Fire on the Water

So after a few months of trying to get things to come together, the scheduling/location and weather gods smiled on us and we were able to get together this weekend at Ambleside Park for the shoot.

While we were waiting for just the right light, we also were able to shoot some portrait shots:

Here’s a short video of Barbara spinning:

I love the sound the fire makes as it spins around. It was quite a challenge to capture things just right with so many variables including the spinning fire, the darkness making it difficult to set focus, the incoming tide, and the cold & wind you get for being on the beach in October – once the sun went down, Barbara was wearing two coats between shots.

Thanks to Charles and Barbara for being such great sports, braving the cold to do this shoot and doing amazing stuff with fire. Also thanks to Matthew Schubert for doing hair for the shoot and being on location with us. You can view my full set of photos on Flickr…I’m still going through the shots so more should pop up soon.

Update: The shots that Scott and Peter took are all up on Flickr now too. I’ve also added about 30 more shots to my set as well:

Lions Gate Bridge Photowalk

As part of the ongoing “No Compacts Allowed” photowalk group on Facebook, this past Sunday was our latest walk which took us across and back over the Lions Gate Bridge. We hung around for the sunset and then some long exposure shots of the bridge from an overpass.

This family waved at us the whole time they approached the bridge…I thought it was kind of a neat view of them zooming across the water too:

This was my favourite long exposure shot from the night too…handheld fisheye – yes, I have the hands of a surgeon:

Despite the title, we welcome anyone on our walks…you don’t have to have a DSLR to come out. Join our Facebook group and get notified of the next outing. We’re trying to do two a month…one at night and one during the day, usually on Sundays.

For a little extra fun, I put the heart shaped aperture disc into my Lensbaby Composer and shot this very brief clip of the bridge:

Great people, fresh air, sunshine, four hours of walking around in the great autumn weather…pretty great way to end the weekend. You can see the rest of my shots from the walk on Flickr.
