iPhone 1.1.2 unlock status

UnlockableI get asked multiple times a day about getting an iPhone and using it in Canada. It was always fun to help friends unlock their iPhones.

Until now.

Ever since the 1.1.2 firmware made it’s appearance (around build week 45 for those keeping score), there hasn’t been a working software unlock for these phones. You can ‘activate’ the phone which means to enable all the features (aside from the phone) which at least it allows you to use the device as an iPod and all the other good things it can be. The team behind the AnySim project has opensourced their code so it could be expected that more people working on the code should mean that an unlock will appear soon….but nobody knows when.

As Yoda would say (kinda), there is another (way).

A hardware unlock is possible via Turbo SIM (deja vu anyone)? Just like before, they are sold out online and are being held hostage on ebay/craigslist for crazy coin. I then heard about the StealthSIM which is basically a cloned version of the TurboSIM except that it appears to be available in Canada unlike the scarce TurboSIM. It seems to go for about $120cdn (delivered) which is steep but also removes some of the worry of upgrading your firmware. We’ll have to wait and how it works once the next version (1.1.3 due any day now) comes out.

My friend Paul, called me up the other day (from his iPhone, of course) after getting his delivered and installed so it definitely works on a new, OOTB (out of the box) iPhone with 1.1.2 firmware. He did have to fully jailbreak and activate his iPhone before it would work. Congrats Paul!

Bonus round:
Get your Asian Geek on!
All the import shops at the Crystal Mall (one of my favorite places to geek out) in Burnaby (and presumably everywhere in Richmond) now have tons of different iPhone cases, skins, holsters and screen protectors for cheap….makes me wonder just how many iPhones are in use up here.

  1. Hi John! Yeah, I’m one of those with the 1.1.2. I’ve done the jailbreak, but am waiting for those wonderful folks to do their stuff so I can activate and use the phone feature. I hope they put in some time over the holidays. :)

  3. Hi Rachit,

I can help you jailbreak it if you like. I did mine the other day.
Let me know how far you have got with it, and I’ll guide you forward

  4. Hi can you help me to jailbreak my Iphone too? 1.1.2 OTB the same problem but what makes it worst is that I have “3” not only one Iphone :( I cant find a nice tutorial they are all saying impossible… at least I want to use it as IPod.
note: I tried one of the Iphones it was ok I can use Safari and all that stuff but the storage is showing 300MB why?

  5. It’s a pretty easy process, first download the 1.1.1 firmware from here http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3883.20070927.In76t/iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw

Also you need to download AppTappInstaller
    http://www.nullriver.com/~adam/AppTappInstaller.exe

So once you have those open itunes, and force your phone into rescue mode by holding the power button and the home button for about 30 secs.

Then itunes will recognise your phone in recovery mode, hold down shift and click restore then select the 1.1.1 firmware from your computer, this will end with an error, that is normal. Then you just run apptappinstaller and select the firmware 1.0.2. This will also end with an error but will open your phone up to be able to jail break.

Then just follow the rest if the instructions listed on this site:
    http://iphone.unlock.no/

and you will have a fully working ipod touch, thats the best we can do for the moment

  6. I’ll need more info to really help.

I don’t think it gives you a list, but rather a file open dialog box to browse to other firmware which you’ll have to download separately.

  7. It doesn’t give us a list, just an option to restore to factory settings and if clicked begins to download 1.1.2 Holding down Open Apple shift does not help. If we click Alt Shift, then Restore we get Choose a File option, but if click Firmware 1.1.2 we get error. If we go back to choose again, the file is gone.

  8. Which firmware are you trying to restore to? If you want 1.1.1, then you’ll have to download that and prep it by renaming it I believe -although it may be different on Macs vs PC (I’ve only done it on a Mac).

If you’re trying to restore to 1.1.2 and you get an error, try redownloading it as yours may be corrupt.

  9. We have a 1.1.2 OOTB iphone and we were trying to install 1.1.1. We are on a Mac but did not rename it. When we try to open 1.1.1 it gets dumped into the trash.

  10. I’m pretty sure you have to rename it from .zip to .ipfw so that it is properly recognized. You also might want to turn off the “open safe files” option in Safari which is probably unpacking it automatically which is causing your issue…then redownload it cleanly.

  11. Hi. We turned off Open Safe Files, & unpacked .zip file. When we press Alt Restore we get the Choose a File window. BUT when we choose Firmware, we get 2 files: all_flash or dfu each with their own stuff in the folders. Now what? ( Thanks, btw)

  12. 1. We cannot choose 1.1.1 from the dialogue box and
    2. The AppTapp installer will not open. It asks us to choose an application. Grrr.

  13. 1.1.2 otb 04.02.13g fireware

    use indenpence
    then restore to 1.1.2

  14. hi i have iphone week 48 and i downgrade and i install BSD subsistem so i stop there, can anyone tell me if there is no problem if i stop in that point, and anyone can tell me if only whit the turbosim can unlock this version of iphone? thanks

  15. Is the sim unlock process out for the 1.1.2 oob and posted anywhere yet? I know the 1.1.3 firmware is selling at AT&T now. If anyone has the answer let me know please.

    Thanks
    Thanasi

  16. I followed Sam’s instructions and now my iPhone is showing a picture of the earth at the activation screen. I think I’m ready to jailbreak?
Can anyone guide me on how to do that so I can at least use the iPod function?
BTW I have the OOTB iphone with firmware 1.1.2.
    THANKS!

  17. Bought iPhone out of the box with 1.1.2 on thanksgiving day in USA. I tried to unlock it with SIM Free/Installer downloaded from Macworld website; after executing and running it on Macbook -iPhone stayed in standby mode.

Yesterday, connected it to iTunes and detected that it needs an upgrade and accepted to be restored and upgrded to 1.1.3, eventually an error it says “The iPhone could not be restoresd. An unknown error occured (1604)” occured and when I restarted it the iPhone is now in displaying the command line “BSD root:md0,major2,minor0” continously. What do I restore it back to 1.1.2 before attempting the unlock/jailbreak/activation. I am now in Africa.
